Opened the box, washed the parts, set it up, plugged it in.
Pushed the top. Nothing.
No motor sound; no ice. NOTHING.
Took it apart, reassembled, checked the outlet.
Pushed the top. Nothing.
Added more ice.
Pushed the top. Nothing.
Removed some ice.
Pushed the top. Nothing.
Called customer service, they're gone for the day.
Went to the Hamilton Beach web site, looking for troubleshooting tips. (This is such a simple unit, there's not much to it.) Not much help there.
Tried a few more times. (I believe the definition of insanity is doing the same thing but expecting different results? Then that would be me.)
Wiped it down.
Boxed it up.
Returning it tomorrow.
VERY UNHAPPY CUSTOMER.


This is definitely worth the $20 I paid and worked like an expensive model. The texture of the ice is fine and soft just as you would get at a shaved ice stand. I'm glad I checked the Amazon reviews before purchasing it. Other people say a negative to this product is the limited quantities you can make with just the two ice molds that come with it. All you need to do is to put the frozen discs in a ziploc bag and keep making more so you have a lot on hand.


The shaved ice is extremely fluffy and fine just as advertised...but positioning the top so the pressure switch is engaged is a challenge. Also, I have to press hard on the top to completely shave the ice disc. Makes a great snow cone if you do not mind a little work.


Tho, this item has a lotta great reviews, I was still somewhat skeptical about how well it would work. The results went beyond what I was hoping for! It's quick and effiecient ice shaving, just over sixty seconds is what it took for me to put together a nice refreshing treat. And the sound was no louder than that of a blender or cake mixer. I don't use it as often, nor do I expect it to last me forever, but at the price I got it for, I think it's a fair exchange.


Please consider other brands of ice shavers rather than this particular item. I have another brand at home and love it. I was purchasing one for the workplace for our staff. Instead of purchasing the type I had at home, I purchased this one since it was about seven dollars cheaper. BIG MISTAKE! First, look at the picture of the item. The two legs suspending the motor allow for only a very small bowel to collect the ice. (The one I have at home is suspended on one arm and allows for any size bowl.) Second, if you fill the receptacle with regular ice cubes, the motor does not have a way to sit squarely on top of the ice. It will only sit flat if you have used the tiny round cups provided to freeze two small circles of ice - not nearly enough ice for most purposes. Using regular cubes will require you to stand holding the motor/shaver in place as it shaves the ice, and it moves around in your hands! You do not need this hassle. Spend a few more dollars and get an ice shaver that does the work - not one that makes YOU work.


It shaves pretty fast for the price and the shaved ice is pretty fine. Not as fine as what you would buy from a stand, but pretty good for the price. The only drawback is that it is pretty finicky. I have to have the top part on just right or it wont start. Also, I do not like that you have to press and hold, I would like one that you can just turn on and let loose...my arm gets a little tired of holding it, since I have to make them for the whole family. BUT, they are tasty and refreshing and as of right now, the Cons are not really getting in the way....By the middle of the summer though, I might have to try a different model.


I purchaced this because I have diabetes and I can freeze sugar free juices and make very light and tastey treats. this works well by shaving the ice into a very fine fluffy snow like ice treat. this item worked better then any of the others that I tried.


I've had this a few weeks and use it almost daily. I love it, the ice is like snow compared to other ice shavers I've seen. You do have to put pressure on the top to shave the ice but it's up to you how much pressure. The more pressure the quicker you get the snow. Very easy to use, easy to clean, you can use the cups to freeze what you want or just put ice cubes in it. Great little product!


Not quite as soft and "flaky" as real shaved ice, alas, but the appliance is simple to operate and clean. Loses a star for the ice quality and another star for the price, which I feel is a little high.


We were extremely pleased with this ice shaver---we really didn't expect the ice to be as finely shaved as those you get at the snowcone stands, but it was! This is a *great* tool for making real shaved ice snow cones at home!
